Collected by Thomas E. Adams (a clerk at the Flathead Agency in Montana in the 1880s and 1890s) and exhibited by Adams at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893; presented to H.R.M. Queen Isabella II of Spain (1830-1904) during the World's Columbian Exposition (also called The Chicago World's Fair) in 1893 as a state gift; given by Queen Isabella to her envoy Carlos Sáenz de Tejada y Groizard (1865-1923) in gratitude for his service; inherited by his great-grandson Carlos Sáenz de Tejada y Benvenuti (ca. 1934-2012); purchased by MAI from Carlos Sáenz de Tejada y Benvenuti in 1968.
