Said to have been owned by the Niimíipuu (Nez Perce) leader Chief Joseph (Hinmuuttu-yalatlat, 1840-1904); probably surrendered to General Nelson A. Miles (1839-1925, U.S. Army) in 1877; said to have been given by General Miles to his assistant, General George W. Baird (1839-1906, U.S. Army); probably inherited by General Baird's son, Colonel George Hathaway Baird (U.S. Army, 1876-1951); inherited by Colonel Baird's daughters, Miss Nancy Rogers Baird (1910-1989) and Miss Betty Taylor Baird (Mrs. Harold Otis Nickerson); donated to MAI by Nancy Baird and Betty Baird in 1953.
