Said to have been owned by Crazy Horse (Tashunca-uitco/Ta-Sunko-Witko, Oglala Lakota, 1849-1877); subsequently in the care of Albert Crazy Horse (Oglala Lakota, 1851-1927), Ellen Crazy Horse (Mrs. Albert Crazy Horse, Oglala Lakota, ca. 1854-1928), Emma Charging Bear (Oglala Lakota), and Julia Crazy Horse (Mrs. Herbert Holy Elk/Mrs. Paul Red Feather, Oglala Lakota, b. ca. 1901); sold by Julia Crazy Horse to an unknown party in 1932; formerly in the collection of Irvin S. Cobb (1876-1944, a New York City and Los Angeles, California, author, journalist, and humorist); purchased by MAI in 1949 from Altman Antiques (Los Angeles, California), operated by Ralph C. Altman (1909-1967).
