Collection history unknown, but said to have belonged to William Clark (1770-1838, of Lewis and Clark fame, later governor of the Missouri Territory and US Superintendent of Indian Affairs); given to the artist George Catlin (1796-1872) before 1838; acquired by Catlin's biographer Thomas Corwin Donaldson (1843-1898) at an unknown date; sold to the Free Museum of Science and Art (later the University Museum at the University of Pennsylvania) in 1901 by his son, Thomas Blaine Donaldson (1876-1947); acquired by George Heye through an exchange with the Free Museum in 1908.
