Collected between 1869 and 1887 by Captain John Gregory Bourke (1846-1896) during military tours in the Southwest; lent to the US National Museum (later the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History) by Captain Bourke in 1891 and part of the collection there until the death of his widow, Mary Horbach Bourke (1861-1927); inherited by the Bourkes' daughters, Anna Bourke Richardson (1887-1976) and Pauline Bourke Maish (1891-1981); donated to MAI by Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Maish in 1928.
