Summary:
An interview of Robert Mangold conducted 1994 June 3, by William Weiss, for the Archives of American Art.
Robert Mangold, one of the more notable American artists of the 1960's and 70's, contributed significantly to the development of the post Abstract Expressionist and as well as the Minimalist painting. The dialogue between the interviewer and Mangold is comprised of a series of questions and answers that chronologically trace and reveal the origins of Mangold's desire in the arts as well as how and where he began to receive instruction in and study the arts at an institutional level. Mangold later shared about his early career as a painter, particularly how his instructors as well as his close friends helped shape his artistic practice and his unique expression of painting. Towards the end of the interview, Mangold reflects on his work and concludes that his work is as fluid, dynamic, and transitional as much of his life experience had been both within and outside of the art world.
