Styron relates his experience witnessing a hearing at the Connecticut State Prison in which a prisoner named Benjamin Reid was granted clemency. He mentions that he saw "Salome, bathed in sunlight" (presumably a sculpture by White) when he returned and muses whether she had something to do with the verdict.
