Summary:
The papers of art historian Henry Edwards Scott Jr measure 11.5 linear feet and date from 1908 to 1990. The papers document his career as an educator through correspondences correspondence journals with friends, family, and colleagues; lectures, journals, manuscripts of works, and other writings; teaching files for various university courses on different subjects in art history; resumes, awards, naval career documents, and other professional activity; scrapbooks of clippings from his service during World War I and scrapbook materials spanning his entire career; clippings, newsletters, books, and other printed material; sketches of furniture and set designs for plays and other artwork; photographs, albums, slides, and negatives of Scott and of his artwork.
Correspondence includes general letters with family, friends, and colleagues. Some of the correspondence relates to summer trips abroad to Europe that Scott would organize and lead; there is also correspondence regarding his academic positions and the publishing of manuscripts. Also included are a number of bound books labeled "Journals," but are letters written by Scott to family and colleagues.
Writings include lectures and lecture notes that Scott presented on various topic in art history, primarily on techniques of art and periods such as ancient Greece. Also included are manuscripts and notes related to articles and books that Scott published. Among the manuscripts is a history of the Adams family from Martha's Vinyard. There are also a collection of calendar and journals dating from 1908 to 1989.
Teaching files are composed primarily of teaching note Scott used for various art history courses at Amherst College and University of Missouri Kansas City. Some of the courses subjects include: Venetian art, Nineteenth century art in the United States, surveys on fine art, and courses related to museums studies. Among the materials are files related to courses on navigation and ship identification Scott taught for the Navy during World War II. Also included are six audio reels of some of his course lectures.
Professional activity material includes resumes, awards, documents related to Scott's time in the Navy reserve during World War II, and material related to summer trips that Scott would organize and lead. Also included are files related to plays Scott helped produce including one on "Giotto's Frescoes." There are also audio cassettes and an audio reel related to "Giotto's Frescoes."
Scrapbook materials consists primarily of box folders that were labeled either "Scrapbook" or "Professional and Personal" that were never compiled into actual scrapbook. Material in the "Scrapbook" folders are more scrapbook in nature containing primarily clippings, photos, and other printed material. Material in the "Professional and Personal" folders are primarily correspondence with some photos and printed material. Also included is an actual scrapbook of four bound books of printed material that Scott compiled during his military tour in Europe during World War I.
Printed material includes newspaper and magazine clippings, some exhibition catalogs, and newsletters. Also included are printed copies of Scott's book on the Adams family of Martha's Vinyard and various articles.
Artwork is primarily sketches of furniture and set designs for plays Scott helped produce. Also included are Christmas cards designed by Scott. Additional sketches are also included in some of the journals, writings, and scrapbook materials.
Photographic material includes photographs and photograph albums of Scott and his family. There are also a number of slides and negatives of Scott's paintings. Also included are four glass negatives of Scott's paintings, one of which is damaged.

Biography Note:
Henry Edwards Scott Jr.(1900-1990) was a painter and educator in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Scott served during World War I, and he taught courses at the Navy Training School during World War II. He completed graduate studies in art history at Harvard University, and he went on to teach at the University of Rochester and the University of Pittsburg between 1928 and 1934. Scott also taught at Amherst College from 1935 to 1947 and at the University of Missouri Kansas City from 1947 until his retirement. Scott died in 1990.

Provenance:
Seven photographs of Scott and one of Scott with Thomas Hart Benton and a ballet program for the Ballet Russes, Paris, 1923, donated in 1981 by Henry Edwards Scott, Jr. The bulk of the collection was donated in 2002 by Sarah S. Cook and Jonathon F. Scott, Scott's children, and in 2014-2015 by Sarah S. Cook.
