Summary:
Translated diary of Gallwitz which describes immigrating to America in 1820, Gallwitz's journey from Baltimore, Maryland to Canton, Ohio and then back to the Carolinas, daily activities, occurrences, and itineraries of Gallwitz's travels, charts of people he met, and of work done by him. Also included are reproductions of maps of travels, sketches from the original diary, and family genealogies.

The donor, Mrs. Helen Fretz Jarrett, is the great-granddaughter of Carl Christ Wilhelm Gallwitz; she typed and translated the original diary, assembled supplemental material, and provided reproductions from the original diary.
