Letters with typescript from Lightner to his uncle John C. Duchman and to his grandmother Duchman relating the struggles and the impressions of a young poor American artist living in Rome.

Provenance:
Albert Hise of the Massillon Museum came across the letters at a sale of the household effects of a family that came to Canton, Oh. from Lancaster, Penn. about 1900. In correspondence of the Archives of American Art, Hise writes "I am sorry I didn't buy the portrait of his [Lightner] grandmother as it sold for only 40.00 dollars and was a creditable piece of work--I hadn't read the letter or perhaps I would have." Only the typescripts have been microfilmed.
