Biography Note:
Mathias Joseph Alten (1871-1938) was a German-born impressionist painter in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Best known for his land- and seascapes, Alten also painted portraits, florals, and still-lifes and is often referred to as the "dean of Michigan painters."
