This series of 16 notebooks includes 14 notebooks containing a various assortment of material taken from Dall's expeditions to Alaska under the auspices of the United States Coast Survey (1871-1880). This Alaskan material contains field notes, current and tidal observations, log notes regarding barometer readings and thermometer readings of the ocean. There are lists of birds, Aleutian whale names and sketches of whales along with lists of specimens of birds collected and field notes regarding strata. Four notebooks on magnetic bearings taken on board the Humboldt (1871-1874), one notebook containing the same information taken on board the Yukon (1874), and two notebooks containing weather and bearing readings on board the Yukon (1880), appear to be copies taken from other original material. The two notebooks not containing material taken under the U.S.C.S. are: (l) Natural History Short Notes and References to Papers, 1875; (2) List of Dall's publications and communications to the press, circa 1882.
