Scope and Contents:
Volume 12 is a collection of newspaper clippings and handwritten notes in a bound scrapbook. There is an index inside the front cover with some hand written notes, and the pages are numbered. Volume 12 is labeled "Miscellaneous" by Meigs, and covers a wide range of topics. One of the largest collections of newspaper articles, illustrations, and political cartoons within this volume concerns the "Egyptian Question," the debate over military action in Egypt by Britain and France. Meigs also included several articles about archaeological and scientific news and discoveries as well as updates on the retirement of Army officers and Army pay. There are several short articles dealing with noteworthy events such as the death of Jesse James and a comet passing over at that time. As with many of the other volumes, there are obituaries for notable public figures, especially Civil War veterans, other military officers, and political/business leaders. Some of the publications appearing in Volume 12 areThe Evening Star, The Daily Evening Telegraph, the Army and Navy Journal, the The New-York Daily Tribune, The Daily Graphic, and The Washington Post.
