Biographical / Historical:
Date determined from BAE Negative 3238-e. In BAE Negative 3238-e Red Cloud is wearing the same feather and scarf that he is wearing in this picture. Little Wound in BAE Negative 3238-e is wearing the same shirt and breastplate that Red Cloud is wearing in this picture. Red Cloud may have changed into the Indian shirt and breastplate to pose for the individual photo. The pants in Arbitrary Number 9 could be the same pair that he is wearing in BAE Negative 3238-e. See also BAE 3237-a, where he is wearing the same clothes. But the feather in this picture is very similar to that worn by White Cloud in BAE Negative 3143. Perhaps Bell lent Indian clothing to the Indians who posed for him. In that case BAE Negative 3238-e need not be taken at the same time as this photograph.
