Photograph of Ruth Landes with Potawatomi shaman Joe Masquat, one of Landes' informants during her fieldwork among the Prarie Potawatomi in Mayetta, Kansas in 1935-36. The photograph was taken after an all-nite Peyote rite, most likely the same one that Landes refers to in her book The Prarie Potawatomi. Handwritten on verso by Landes: "V. 1936 after all-nite peyote. Outsd Indn supt's offc at Mayetta, Ks. Indn mixed blood, of my clrng. Joe Blandin -- white F. Joe Meskwat died 1964, spring -- sd Louise Nocktonick at Mayetta at 61?"
