Ruth Landes on grounds of Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá, Candomblé house of Aninha, high priestess. Photograph from anthropologist Ruth Landes' 1938-1939 field research on Afro-Brazilians and Candomblé in Brazil in the city of Bahia (now known as Salvador). Handwritten by Landes on verso: "on roça of Aninha -- 2 right of pict. is string of huts in wh gods r kept -- Bahia, Aug. 1938."
