This photograph was taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while conducting field research at Afikpo village-group, southeastern Nigeria, from January 30, 1988 to February 5, 1988.
Original caption reads, "Between January 30 and February 5, 1988, I revisited, with my wife Carol, the Igbo group of communities called Afikpo on the Cross River in southeastern Nigeria, .... Work of the sculptor Luelu Otta Otta, sculptor Ukpa Village. He is completely deaf. An igri mask with an Njenje parade masquerade igri figure on top of it. This combination is new to me."
