Scope and Contents:
This photograph was taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while conducting field research at Afikpo village-group, southeastern Nigeria, from January 30, 1988 to February 5, 1988.
Original caption reads, "Between January 30 and February 5, 1988, I revisited, with my wife Carol, the Igbo group of communities called Afikpo on the Cross River in southeastern Nigeria, .... Wood male figure in front of the large ikoro wood gong on the second floor of the men's rest house (obiogo) in Agbogo ward, Mgbom village. Such a figure has been common in the front. The gong is used to signal important events, for important elder's announcements, and in the old days if the village was attacked in warfare. The whole wood gong with both male and female figures. Where a female figure exists with these gongs it is usually in back and not as well or completely carved and dressed or painted. It does not always exist." [Ottenberg field research notes, January 1988-February 1988].
