This photograph was taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while conducting field research at Afikpo village-group, southeastern Nigeria, from January 30, 1988 to February 5, 1988.
Original caption reads, "Between January 30 and February 5, 1988, I revisited, with my wife Carol, the Igbo group of communities called Afikpo on the Cross River in southeastern Nigeria, .... The ancestral rest house (obu) in Ezi Akputa compound, Mgbom village, which was rebuilt when I last there in 1959-60. partly of concrete, partly mud. Note the typically tall shrine to Ibini Okpabe, the Aro-derived spirit at the far left." [Ottenberg field research notes, January 1988-February 1988].
