This photograph was taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while conducting field research at Afikpo village-group, southeastern Nigeria, from January 30, 1988 to February 5, 1988.
Original caption reads, "Between January 30 and February 5, 1988, I revisited, with my wife Carol, the Igbo group of communities called Afikpo on the Cross River in southeastern Nigeria, .... Apostolic Faith Mission sign between Amuro and Mgbom villages, on the road. One of the numerous new churches at Afikpo, of an evangelical or fundamentalist nature, which as elsewhere in Nigeria and Africa, has gained ground. The original mission churches at Afikpo were Presbyterian and then Catholic, the only ones there when I did my research in the 50s." [Ottenberg field research notes, January 1988-February 1988].
