"In the time of Ibn Tūlūn the Citadel hill was also watered by an aqueduct which drew its supply from a well at Basatin, near the Muqattam, to the south. This aqueduct discharged near the citadel where the water was raised by three sāqyas. An-Nāsir built another aqueduct, partly carried on Saladin's wall, which took its water from the river near Old Cairo. The two aqueducts and the well were the only water supply to the Citadel until the installation of the Cairo water works in 1872." [Russell D., 1963: Medieval Cairo and the Monasteries of the Wādi Natrūn. Weidenfeld and Nicolson]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
