"The nomadic shepherds in the great lake's region of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo are distinguished by a tuft on the front of the head. The Maasai (Masai) wear a multitude of small braids arranged in a border at the front of the head, over the temples, and in back." This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
