"The nomadic shepherds in the great lake's region of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo are distinguished by a tuft on the front of the head. The Maasai wear a multitude of small braids arranged in a border at the front of the head, over the temples, and in back." [Sieber R., Herreman F., 2000: Hair in African Art and Culture, Prestel]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
