In order to save trees from a sawmill, Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) purchased the property. The property was transformed into a public park with outdoor theater and fountain garden, box garden, rose garden, Italian garden, and conservatory among other features. Persons and organizations associated with the garden include: Pierre S. du Pont (former owner, designer, 1906-1954); Isabelle C. Greene & Assoc. (lanscape architect of silver garden); Kier Davidson (rockwork designer); Frank Burnaby (lighting).
