General:
The six garden rooms-one enclosed in an Orangerie-were designed and built in conjunction with the architect of the house from 2013 to 2019 within an urban quarter acre property. The gardens employ classic principals of symmetry, axial relationship, scale and proportion and are inspired by French, Italian and 20th century American examples. Tall hedges define the space of each garden, starting with nine-foot laurel in the arrival court that is paved with Belgian limestone cobbles. Lions set on antique limestone bases mark the entrance to the fountain promenade. The fountain, an amalgamation of styles, sits between three-foot wide pathways to the front stairs, bordered by boxwood hedges and azalea. The terrace at the back of the house overlooks the pool and a tall magnolia hedge at the perimeter of the property. The same laurel hedging, prunus caroliniana bright and tight, is used along the sides of the pool court, and allows glimpses of the flower garden and the Orangerie. The square flower garden has checkered paving of limestone and synthetic grass with four large Versailles boxes holding limelight hydrangea standards and seasonal flowers. Azalea adds color and a carved stone bench sits on the axis of the Orangerie and pool court hedge opening. The pool court can be entered from the flower garden or the Orangerie between tall laurel topiary columns. The slate gray plaster of the pool blends with crushed oyster shell and limestone paving. Two circa 1920 lion statues have been fitted with water jets that feed into the pool. The Orangerie has Paladian style glazing, full spectrum UV lighting and automated watering for the heirloom citrus trees in Versailles boxes. Jasmine vines wrap the building that is surrounded by laurel hedges. All aspects of the gardens and the buildings were the result of close coordination between the landscape designers, Matthew and Heather Murray, and the architect Alex Eskenasy.
