Summary:
Scrapbook consisting mainly of miscellaneous newsclippings from the New York Tribune and other sources dating from 1932 and 1937, apparently compiled by David C. Locke, a public school administrator in Monaca, Beaver Co., Pennsylvania. Many of the articles have a general focus on education (particularly with a technical, scientific, or mathematical theme, such as the ideas of Albert Einstein); also represented are news stories on Pennsylvania history; medical trivia; inventions; eugenics; highway design; calendar reform; the metric system; government service (federal and local); alcohol and post-Prohibition American culture; brain teasers and puzzles; poetry; prayers; and comics. There are also some handwritten genealogical details about the Locke family.
Biographical/Historical note:
David C. Locke was an educator (supervising principal and superintendent of schools) in Monaca, Beaver Co., Pennsylvania, in the early decades of the 20th century. He was also a graduate of Grove City College.
General note:
Title devised by cataloger.
The cover title ("Minutes of Committee on High & Normal Schools") is completely unrelated to the contents of the scrapbook.
Items are tipped in or mounted on the leaves of a commercially-produced blank book, with page numbers stamped in blue. Some leaves were removed at some point in the past, either by Mr. David C. Locke or a subsequent owner. A few items are laid in.
A handwritten letter from David C. Locke to Leslie Leland Locke is tipped in at the end of the volume.
Local Notes:
SCDIRB copy 39088016107195 has a contemporary gilt-tooled black half-leather binding with black embossed-cloth paper boards, and faux marbled edges.
