Howard K. Gloyd (1902-1978) received his Bachelor of Science degree from Ottawa University in 1924 and an honorary Ph.D. in 1942. He earned his M.S. degree at Kansas
State College, Manhattan in 1929, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1937. After the completion of his doctorate, Gloyd became the Director of the Chicago Academy
of Sciences where he remained until 1958 when he joined the faculty of the University of Arizona. Gloyd published in both the fields of ornithology and herpetology but he
is best known as a herpetologist. His life's work became a monograph covering the genus Agkistrodon world-wide, on which he worked with Roger Conant.
