Introduction:
This finding aid was digitized with funds generously provided by the Smithsonian Institution Women's Committee.
Descriptive Entry:
These records primarily document the operation of the Chesapeake Bay Center for Environmental Studies (CBCES) under Director J. Kevin Sullivan, 1976-1983. Also included are records created by Sullivan as Assistant Director, 1972-1975, and Acting Director, 1975-1976. A small amount of material created by Directors Kyle R. Barbehenn, 1965-1968, and Francis S. L. Williamson, 1968-1975, is also present. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, proposals, reports, publications, and related materials documenting the CBCES research and education programs; CBCES relations with environmental organizations, citizen groups, and government agencies concerned with the welfare of the Chesapeake Bay; CBCES activities as a member of the Chesapeake Research Consortium; land use and facilities at CBCES; plans to merge CBCES with the Radiation Biology Laboratory; Sullivan's research on fisheries; and CBCES administration of and research on the Poplar Islands. Also included are copies of the CBCES newsletter, Rhode River Review.
