Descriptive Entry:
These records document the work of Susan A. Hamilton as Bicentennial Coordinator, acting under the direction of the Assistant Secretary for History and Art. They also cover preliminary planning for Bicentennial programs carried out between 1968 and the creation of the Office in 1971. For a fuller record of such activities, researchers should also consult the records of John J. Slocum, Special Assistant to the Secretary (Record Unit 341). These records consist of correspondence, memoranda, publications, photographs, videotapes, a banner, and posters documenting the work of the Coordinator and the committee, as well as proposals and planning documents for both approved and rejected projects prepared to mark the Bicentennial. Plans for Art in America: A Bibliography and for an exhibition, The Federal City: Plans and Realities, are especially well represented.
Historical Note:
The Bicentennial Coordinator's Office was created on July 1, 1971, to coordinate the work of a special Institution-wide committee intended to plan the Smithsonian's activities in observance of the Bicentennial of the American Revolution. The office was abolished in 1977 at the conclusion of the Bicentennial observance.
