Otto Mayr is a mechanical engineer, historian of technology, curator, museum director and author. He received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from
the Technical University of Munich in 1956. In 1964 he received his master's in science at the University of Rochester and in 1968 he obtained his Ph.D. from the Technical
University of Munich.
Mayr was appointed Curator of Mechanical and Civil Engineering in the Division of Engineering and Industry at the National Museum of History and Technology (now the National
Museum of American History) in 1970. He went on to be chair of the Department of Science and Technology, 1976-1977, and then acting director of the museum from 1978-1979.
In 1983 Mayr became the general director of the Deutsches Museum and served in that capacity until he retired in 1992.
This accession consists of two volumes of images, invitations, news releases, brochures, and other related materials that were compiled to document the period of time when
Otto Mayr was Acting Director of the National Museum of History and Technology (now the National Museum of American History). In addition, there are images from Mayr's participation
at the International Symposium of Science Museums in Future Society which took place at Sunkyong, South Korea.
