Date:
1969-2002
Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of records documenting the administration of the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program (GLTCP). Originally administered entirely by the National Zoological Park (NZP), Department of Zoological Research, the GLTCP focused on the conservation of the golden lion tamarin in its natural habitat and was responsible for the release of captive-born golden lion tamarins into the Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas (Brazil). In 1992, overall administration of the program was transferred to the Brazilian non-governmental organization, Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado. The Department of Zoological Research continued to administer NZP's involvement in reintroduction, tracking, and conservation education. Topics documented in this accession include fund raising, budget, conservation training, studbook administration, policies, publicity, research publication, evaluation of calling patterns, observation of released golden lion tamarins, reintroduction logistics, and involvement with international conservation organizations and committees. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting materials, clippings, newsletters, observations, data evaluations, policies, procedures, permits, manuscripts, filming requests, presentations, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, posters, images, maps, audio recordings, notes, and related materials. Some materials are in electronic format. Some materials were created while the unit was known as the Office of Animal Management (through 1979), the Office of Animal Programs (1979-1984), or the Department of Zoological Research and Education (1984-1985).
