Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of documentation of the professional activities of Michael J. Neufeld, including presentations, papers, books, and general research. Neufeld held assistant professorships at several universities between 1984 and 1988 as well as several fellowships with the Smithsonian Institution from 1988 through 1990. In 1990, he was hired as a curator by the National Air and Space Museum, first in the Department of Aeronautics, which became the Aeronatics Division in 1997, and then in the Space History Division in 1999. Neufeld's research specialties include rocketry and the role of aviation in World War II. Books documented in this accession include The Skilled Metalworkers of Nuremberg: Craft and Class in the Industrial Revolution; The Rocket and the Reich: Peenemünde and the Coming of the Ballistic Missile Era; and The Bombing of Auschwitz: Should the Allies Have Attempted It?. Materials include correspondence, notes, proposals, papers, transcripts, meeting materials, clippings, images, and related materials.
