This accession consists of videotapes and audio elements documenting Smithsonian Institution orientation productions for the Visitor Information and Associates' Reception
Center (VIARC) created by Smithsonian Productions and its predecessor, the Office of Telecommunications. The first production, titled "The Smithsonian Institution," was completed
in 1984 and was updated in 1989. The production was redone in the early 1990s and released as "Guide to the Smithsonian" in 1994 with Ira Michael Heyman, Secretary, narrating.
A 2001 version replaced Heyman with Lawrence M. Small, Secretary, as narrator. Materials consist of 1" magnetic audio tapes, Betacam tapes, VHS, D-2, Digital8, digital audio
tape, and 3/4" U-matics. Some materials are in electronic format.
