These records consist of glass plate negatives taken by Clarence R. Shoemaker, who has held the title of Aid, Assistant Curator, Associate Curator, and Associate in Zoology between 1911 and 1958 in the United States National Museum, Division of Marine Invertebrates. Subjects include scientists, specimens and specimen diagrams, laboratories, and maps of expedition routes. Included among the scientists is Waldo L. Schmitt, who held the positions of Aid, Division of Marine Invertebrates, 1910-1911; Assistant Curator and later Head Curator, Division of Marine Invertebrates, 1915-1943; Head Curator, Department of Biology, 1943-1947; and Head Curator, Department of Zoology, 1947-1957. This collection was originally part of the Clarence R. Shoemaker Papers at the Historical Society of Washington, DC. The Society retained photography related to Shoemaker's travels, family, and personal life and offered photography related to his professional life to the Smithsonian Institution Archives.
