Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of reports, dictionaries and indexes relating to Indians of North America and to the Seminole Indians in Florida in particular, circa 1913-1928. The materials were compiled using the records of the Bureau of American Ethnology by Lucien A. Spencer, who was Special Commissioner to the Florida Seminoles for what was then called the Office of Indian Affairs. Includes information on history, myths and legends, costume, social customs, religious practices, language, agriculture and architecture. Two black and white photographs of Spencer are also present.
Biographical / Historical:
Lucien A. Spencer was an Episcopal minister who was appointed special commissioner for the Florida Seminoles in 1913; he held the position until 1930. During his tenure, there was an emphasis on introducing agricultural methods to the Seminoles.
