Scope and Contents:
Footage taken at a July 4th rodeo in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. Parade shots at the rodeo include Ben Black Elk in buckskins and war bonnet and truncated versions of the war and kettle dance as well as a fancy dancer. Footage also includes a Sioux Indian Dog feast held by Chief Roan Bear at the Cheyenne River Agency, South Dakota, showing preparation of a shunka (dog) accompanied by cooking of buffalo meat, tipsina (Indian turnip), radishes, and other vegetables. Please note that the contents of the collection and the language and terminology used reflect the context and culture of the time of its creation. As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today.
