106 letters from Emerson Burkhardt to Singer in which Burkhardt discusses his views on modern art, Americans' attitudes toward the fine arts, New York art galleries and critics, the social system in America, and his painting in general. In addition there are several letters to Singer from John Barsotti, an artist and friend of Burkhardt, Roger Banham, author of a manuscript for Burkhardt's biography, and Cecile Perkins, friend of Burkhardt, and 2 clippings about Burkhardt.

Painter and assistant director of Butler Institute of American Art; Youngstown, Ohio. Emerson Burkhardt is an Ohio painter and teacher, and a friend of Singer.
