Scope and Contents:
Correspondence of Hart, ca. 1,000 letters, mostly with Clarence W. Bowen, regarding Hart's activities on the planning committee of the Centennial of George Washington's Inauguration, New York City, 1889 and correspondence concerning Hart's chairmanship of the Committee on Retrospective Art, World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, 1893.
Biographical / Historical:
Charles Henry Hart Art (1847-1918) was a historian, lawyer, writer, and director, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1882-1904. He published widely on the subject of eighteenth and nineteenth-century portraiture in the United States.
Provenance:
Microfilmed 1956 by the Archives of American Art with other art-related papers in the Manuscript Division of the New York Public Library. Included in the microfilming project were selected papers of the Art Division and the Prints Division.
Restrictions:
The Archives of American art does not own the original papers. Use is limited to the microfilm copy.
