Scope and Contents:
Correspondence, writings, sketches, photographs, biographical material, business papers, and printed materials.
REEL D22: 3 letters, 8 sketches and 2 poems by Fredenthal; a clipping; and 6 photographs of Fredenthal and his work. Two of the letters are to Sarah Medow, the other is a typed letter of congratulations to Fredenthal.
REELS 877-878: Personal documents; 2 books illustrated by Fredenthal, OF MEN AND BATTLE and SURPRISE, 1944; and 2 scrapbooks containing clippings, photographs of Fredenthal and his work, his illustrations for the book, TOBACCO ROAD, 2 poems, exhibition catalogs, magazine articles with his illustrations in LIFE and VOGUE, and letters of commendation from several army officials including Douglas MacArthur.
REELS 2005-2006: Correspondence with Edward Chavez, Charles Culver, Lamar Dodd, Olin Dows, Edith Halpert, John Hersey, Lawrence Kupferman, Edward B. Rowan, Zoltan Sepeshy, and Forbes Watson; papers relating to his Federal Art Project work, his years as a war correspondent, reactions to attacks on modern art as "Communist," and artists' rights' writings; business papers; financial records and correspondence; printed material; biographical material; and reproductions.
REEL 2030: Photographs of Fredenthal, his work, and friends and family.
REEL 2804: Two original color sketches prepared by Fredenthal for Fortune magazine.

Provenance:
Material on reels 877-878, lent, and reels 2005-2006, and 2030 donated by Ruth Ann Fredenthal, Fredenthal's daughter. Material on reel D22 donated by Mrs. Irwin Meyer, whose relation to Fredenthal is unknown, and material on reel 2804 donated by Fortune magazine.
