Scope and Contents:
Correspondence, primarily business-related between Charlotte Partridge and Margaret Clark with Washington, D.C. officials, Wisconsin artists and staff members of the project; and two separate alphabetically arranged series of biographical sketches of Wisconsin artists. The first series includes brief typed resumes of the careers of the artists prepared by the FAP staff. The second series consists of biographical records of all those artists that worked for the project prior to 1939.
Also included in the collection is the Wisconsin FAP record cards arranged alphabetically for each art work produced by the project; and Index of American Design photographic negatives of drawings made for the Index, plate lists of the drawings, a record of the artifacts borrowed for copying, and lists and data sheets for the artifacts copied.
Biographical / Historical:
Federal work relief program for artists during the depression. Charlotte R. Partridge was director of the Layton Art Gallery and the director of the Federal Art Project in Wisconsin as well. Margaret D. Clark succeeded Partridge in 1941. Victor Volk supervised the Index of American Design in Wisconsin from 1938 on.
