Painter and educator; Providence, R.I.. Born in Marquette, Michigan, Downing was educated at Harvard University and at the University of Chicago. A member of the College Art Association and the Providence Art Club, he taught at the University of Chicago and at Brown University. His wife, Antoinette Downing, is an architectural historian.
