This photograph was taken during a US Geological Survey expedition led by John Wesley Powell (1834-1902); for a book on the Ute, Paiute, and Shoshone, Powell combined images from the 1871 to 1873 surveys and credited John K. Hillers as the photographer. In reality, the photo may have been taken by Hillers, E. O. Beaman, or James Fennemore, all of whom acted as Survey photographers for Powell. No other collection history information available.
