Collection History:
This photograph was taken during a US Geological Survey expedition led by John Wesley Powell (1834-1902); for a book on the Ute, Paiute, and Shoshone, Powell combined images from the 1871 to 1873 surveys and credited John K. Hillers as the photographer. In reality, the photo may have been taken by Hillers, E. O. Beaman, or James Fennemore, all of whom acted as Survey photographers for Powell. This print formerly in the collection of Joseph W. Keppler (1872-1956, long-time friend of George Heye); donated to MAI at an unknown date.

Outdoor portrait of Kani, a young Nuaguntits woman, posed in front trees and bushes. She wears a fringed hide skirt and covers her bare chest with her hands.
