Entries describe work in office or field work. Field work entries are headed with date, name of colleague with whom he worked, location, and nature of work completed. Several visits were to sites where fossilized plant specimens were discovered. These entries describe locations (distances and landmarks including structures); terrain characteristics including ground composition, type of stone, color, measurements of layers, time period (Cambrian Carboniferous); and fossilized plant specimens collected. Note states that some paleontological and stratigraphical results are recorded in local field notebook. Locations across Virginia, Maryland, Alabama (Montgomery), and Georgia (Chattahoochee River).
