This volume contains multiple field books. Volume 55 documents work completed during the for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1964. 1) is a copy of the journal, plant sketches, and catalog of C. Douglas Hackman during the Southern Island Cruise, #4 . Covers cruise entries February to March 1964. Daily, dated, journal style entries document life aboard ship (USS Lippan), facilities, daily activities, specimen collecting, detailed observations of vegetation and wildlife on islands visited, and some reference to insects observed. Some entries are headed with locations. Locations include Howland Island, Baker Island, Phoenix Island [Rawaki], Jarvis, Christmas [Kiritimati], Palmyra, Fanning [Tabuaeran], Washington. Plant drawings have corresponding table of data about where they were observed. 2) Hackmans' journal covers June 5 - November 27, 1964 Cruise on the USS Takelma. Entries are much the same as the previous, and the cruise additionally visited Malden, Starbuck, McKean, Line Islands.
