This Cuban refugee vessel was used in July of 1992 by two young men. The raft is made of large styrofoam pieces covered and adhered with tar, then wrapped in cotton fabric. The styrafoam was cut to resemble a boat, with sats cut out and covered in vinyl previously used as a shower curtain. Wood panels were secured to either side of the vessel for use with oars.
Hermanos Al Rescate is an Cuban-American group that rescued Cuban immigrant "boat people" or "Marielitos" from the sea ; the ersatz boat was made by Cuban immigrants.
While the whos and whys of the passengers are lost, this vessel tells its own tale.
