Leonard Peter Schultz served as assistant curator of fishes from 1936 to 1938, when he was named curator-in-charge of the Division of Fishes, a position he held until 1965. He held the title senior zoologist from 1965 to 1968. Operation Crossroads was an expedition to Bikini Atoll and the northern Marshall islands in 1946 under the auspices of the Department of the Navy. Schultz was in charge of the biological investigation of the reef fishes in the area. His investigations centered on the relative abundance of fauna before and after the atom bomb tests. Specimens were collected for the purpose of comparison and to make possible a study of anatomical variations among the various island fish populations.

Summary:
In this first page of his log on Operation Crossroads to the Marshall Islands, Leonard P. Schultz details the beginnings of the operation. He notes that the trip "came up very suddenly," and that as such it was a "mad scramble to get a collecting outfit together and ready" in time. He discusses some of the preparations and supplies required, including the acquisition of large amounts of cubeĢ root and formalin. Having departed for the project on February 13, he explains that "all transportation and subsistence are to be taken care of by the United States Navy."

Schultz records that he "worked like a beaver" in order to get his fish specimens from Bikini packed to be shipped to the United States on the U.S.S. Sumner so that they would "get to Washington by June 1 when [he] may be able to get back and work on them." After detailing some of the specifics of this shipment, he turns to more personal matters, taking note of the letters that he received and posted.

Summary:
A letter to Dr. Alexander Wetmore, the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, from Dr. Leonard P. Schultz summarizing his work since the report on collections made at Eniwetok Atoll on June 12. Dr. Schultz briefly describes the lot of fish specimens that he will send to the United States National Museum in a few days' time and gives a cursory summary of the chronology of his work from June 12 to July 7, mentioning various travels and collecting activities, his work with Life Magazine Photographer, Mr. Goro, and the arrival and training of Capt. Earl S. Herald, who will be taking over Dr. Schultz's field work while he returns to the U.S. National Museum. Dr. Schultz also describes his experience of the A-bomb or Able test (a nuclear weapons test) on July 1, 1946, mentioning the procedure for watching the test, and then describing in detail what he saw of the explosion from a boat 20 miles off Bikini.

Summary:
SIA2010-0906 and SIA2010-0907 are the pages of a letter that Dr. Leonard P. Schultz wrote to Lt. Comdr. C. A. Barnes summarizing his "work on the reef fishes of the Crossroads Project". He describes the poisoning stations "that can be treated statistically as to the relative abundance of fishes," and the marine light which "was used at night with the intention of measuring the abundance of fish attracted to it." After relaying the results of these and other counts, he outlines how he believes the study of the reef fishes should be run after the Baker Day nuclear weapon test, and states his conclusions of the affect of another nuclear weapon test, the Able Day test, on the reef and lagoon fishes in the area. Based on the fact that "no fish were seen floating on the surface waters of the lagoon a few hours after Able Day test nor on July 3" when he cruised to several places in the area, he argues that "little or no damage was done to the reef or lagoon fishes from the Able Day explosion." Finally, he remarks that he is now taking leave and returning to the United States National Museum to "begin work on the final report on the Crossroads fishes" and is turning over the field work to Capt. Earl S. Herald.
SIA2010-0908 is a chart entitled "Classification of the index of abundance according to the kind of habitat fished. March 10 to July 1, 1946."
