Abstract:
William Dall records observations of areas around California, 1901, while working for the United States Geological Survey. Information includes geological, fossil and shell study of the area along bluffs and shorelines of sites. Near Crescent city he visits the bluffs along the shore of Lake Earle down to Pebble beach, giving detailed description of strata and characteristics of rock and fossils observed. There are detailed notes about Miocene and Pliocene epochs sandstone formations. Most of the notebook is blank.

Abstract:
The field book documents the work of William Dall in Southern Oregon, Coos Bay, and University of California, 1897, while working for the United States Geological Survey. Entries are dated and pertain to geological study of locations in Oregon. They include descriptions of specimens collected (including bag number); locations; observations of terrain; and descriptions of formations and characteristics of rock. Includes list of recent shells from Coos Bay and lists of strata with descriptions. The second portion of the notebook describes collections of fossils at University of California at Berkley. Additional locations include the vicinity of Oakland, Diller Station, and Callapooya.

Abstract:
William Dall describes sites across Oahu, Hawaii in 1899, while working for the United States Geological Survey. Includes descriptions of marine and geological study of the area. He visits sites with a local Professor Wood from the Territorial Normal School, in Honolulu, familiar with the geology of the area. Includes cross sections of gravel pits southwest of Diamond Head and descriptions of the coral rock strata. Most of the notebook is blank.

Abstract:
The field book documents William Dall's collecting and observations of Alaska Coal Fields, Bogoslof Volcano, Corral Hollow, California, 1895 while with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Entries are dated and usually list location at the top. Subject matter covers daily occurrences, geological formations, weather conditions, descriptions of anchorage spots, specimens collected (includes the bag numbers for specimens), and mineral deposits. Near the end of entries is a list of distances, with bearings, for Bogaslof and Grewingk islands. Locations across Alaska include the vicinity of Sitka, Bogoslof Island, Kootznahoo Inlet, Kodiak Island, Augustine Island , Point Possession, Kialagvit Bay [Wide Bay], and Grewingk Glacier. Includes sketches of observed terrain.

Abstract:
The note book documents work for the United States Coast Survey, 1880. Data recorded includes voyage information -- time, barometric readings, air and water temperature and wind direction, measured every four hours. Entries describe destinations, activities of survey members, interactions with local inhabitants, descriptions of coastal terrain, crops farmed by indigenous tribes, vegetation, and soil composition. In back are tables of sea temperatures of the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean.

Abstract:
The diary documents daily activities of William Dall, including his work along the coast of Alaska of 1873 -1874 while working for the United States Coast Survey (USCS). Entries are chronological, headed with the date, and are listed on the left hand side of the notebook for the first half of the diary. Notes, calculations, or illustrations are usually on the right hand side. Entries detail weather, daily activities, observed flora and fauna (i.e. quantity and types of fish found in waters), measurements,. Many of the measurements and calculations focus on three mountains: Fairweather, Edgecomb [Edgecumbe], and Crillon. Other locations include the vicinity of Port Mulgrave and Chignik Bay.

Abstract:
The field book documents William Dall's survey work in Alaska during 1871 as part of the United States Coast Survey. Some entries are dated and include information about travel and weather. It mostly contains notes on methods of use and placement of survey equipment for acquiring needed data for survey work and the collected survey data. In dated entries, it includes measurements and signal locations for vicinity of Ulakhta Harbor [Dutch Harbor] and Small Harbor [Small Bay]. Additionally, there is a report on meteorology, tides and currents around Unalaska.

Abstract:
The field book includes descriptions and observations of sites in Alaska during William Dall's work there in 1873. Most of the book is made up of different kinds of lists -- observed birds, birds collected, and species not identified by common name. Latin and common names as used throughout. Sites for which lists of observed species exist include: Attu Island, Kyska Island, Amchitka Island, Saint George, Port Moller, and Pribyloff [Pribilof] Island. Dall also describes rocks and strata observed for Atka and Kyska. Includes sketches of specimens, charts, Aleut terms for Whales, and survey measurements.
