The village of Ireli, located on the Bandiagara escarpment is approximately one kilometer long and is divided by a steep-walled gorge accessible only by foot. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17,1970.

Scope and Contents:
"The Dogon value trees for several reasons. Some trees add important ingredients for seasoning and shortening the sauce added to the daily meals of millet mush. the Oro tree, a baobab, bears leaves that when cooked with sesame yield a dark green sauce greatly relished by the Dogon. Used more intensively than other trees, the baobab yields poor firewood and consequently is never cut down. Other trees that are important for their fruit are the Ponu; Omunu; Sa; and Yuro." [Hollyman S. and Van Beek W., 2001: Dogon, Africa's People of the Cliffs. Harry N Abrams, Inc.]. During his trip to Mali, Elisofon visited the Dogon people in Sanga (Sangha), a group of thirteen villages lying east of Bandiagara at the top of an escarpment. The most important villages are Ogol-du-Haut and Ogol-du-Bas. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17,1970.

During his trip to Mali, Elisofon visited Goundam, the chief town of the picturesque region of Lake Faguibine. its population consists of Tuareg and Maure nomads, Songhay farmers and some Bozo fishermen. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.

Original title reads, "Roll on workers carrying bags of groundnuts or peanuts up side of a nascent pyramid, on the premises of P.S. Mandrides &Co, Ltd, Kano. Mandrides' oil mill is one of the largest in Nigeria. The workers are almost all Hausa, they are paid from 7 to 10 shillings a day. The bags contain shelled peanuts." Scope and Contents:
The park includes: part of Lake Edward (Lake Rutangize), the Semliki River valley, parts of the Rwindi, Ishasha and Rutshuru valleys south of the lake, the Virunga area within former Zaïre, and part of the Rwenzori (Ruwenzori) range. Lake Edward belongs to the Nile river system and Lake Kivu to the Congo Basin river system. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
