Abstract:
The bound volume contains typed field notes of Helmut Buechner, November 7, 1948 - 1950. Title does not include 1948. Also includes notations, newsclippings, correspondence with notations, and hand colored maps with notes relating to animal populations. The book begins with a table of contents covering general notes, mammals (general, elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, mountain goat, college committee of research), birds (general, grouse, Hungarian partridge, ringneck pheasant, quail, waterfowl). Notes include a combination of dated entries or entries organized by type of animal. These entries include a varying combination of information: observations of travel details, notes on participants, temperature and weather, birds seen with quantity and sometimes gender, observations of types of mammals seen (combination of type, quantity, gender, age, time of day, elevation, behavior, appearance) including their environs (area vegetation), terrain including erosion. There are also tables of observation data for game and fowl. There are notes on a wide variety of activities including samples of scat and collected, animals killed, and forage clip plots. Locations are through out Washington.

Abstract:
The field notes document Helmut Buechner's work with an elephant census in Uganda, 1957 - 1962. Materials are a combination of typed and written notes, tables of observation data on herds and their contents (number of calves etc.), correspondence relating to research issues, copied sections from reference texts, 2 maps of buffalo and elephant distribution in Park between Butiaba and Pakanyi (1957), tables on weather, results of aerial elephant counts, progress report (for Murchison Falls National Park [Kabalega Falls National Park] and vicinity, Uganda), and typed daily field notes for January - December 1957 and August 1959. Field notes relate weather, terrain, herd observations (some are aerial), and photographs taken.

Abstract:
The field notes document Helmut Buechner's observations of wildlife, September 30 - December 15, 1949. Entries are written on loose sheets of paper, dated and headed with location and species which include mule deer and elk. They describe location information, fellow observers, and fauna observed (common name, quantity). Some entries detail numbered plots and transects which sometimes include Terrain (elevation, slope) and vegetation. There is a table of data for vegetation types and location coverage. Locations are in William T. Wooten Game Range [Wooten Game Reserve], Washington.

Abstract:
The field notes, correspondence, and photographs documents Helmut Buechner's observations of bighorn sheep in Arizona for the Bighorn Sheep Project, 1955 - 1956. There is a hand written notebook that lists plants collected (date, specimen number, type, sometimes numbered plot and abundance), photographs of bighorn sheep on geological formations (sometimes with captions including location and date). There are typed field notes for April 3 - July 4, 1955, detailing observations of flora and fauna (sometimes notes on abundance) with time of day, colleagues with whom worked, work completed, and travel routes, as well as lists of birds and plants seen. There is also a table summarizing bighorn count on Kofa Game Range, 1955, and excerpt of report on Cabeza Prieta Game Range. Locations include Yuma and other sites in Arizona.

The field notes, correspondence, and photographs document Helmut Buechner's observations of bighorn sheep in Colorado as part of the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Surveys / Bighorn Sheep Study, 1955. Materials include copied sections of reference texts; tables of information (herd no., forest, name of herd, estimated number, range, and remarks); progress reports; typed portions of field notes discussing observations of herds (population characteristics) and locations; hand written tables with location, date, community, page number, that list notes on terrain and vegetation; map with notes on field work by the Buffalo Peaks; reports; and photographs of herds in mountainous terrain as well as sheep traps (1950, 1951).

Abstract:
The papers and note book document Helmut Buechner's observations in the Mill Creek Watershed (Washington), 1952. The notebook includes notes on expenses as well as possibly meetings; tables of observation data; and dated entries. Dated entries vary in format; some start with location and lists of observed wildlife (identification not clear, possibly listed as abbreviations); others state time of day with notes on terrain (slope), observed birds, presence of scat, state of vegetation, and sometimes notes on reason for vegetation present condition. The papers document Helmut Buechner's observations in Sun River country, Lewis and Clark National Forest, Augusta, Montana, December 20 -26, 1954; locations during March, April, and October 1954. Notes from April 1954 include dated entries discussing travel details (time of day), observed birds (times of day, quantity, type, sex), and notes on vegetation in numbered zones. Location is not clear. October and March 1954 notes include the same information and also temperature. The papers include field notes, journal, and vegetation observation sheets documenting Helmut Buechner's work, 1951. Journal entries (July 1 -28, 1951) are dated and include travel details, daily activities, colleagues, field work completed (descriptions of transects, vegetation types, and abundance), weather, wildlife observations (quantity, time of day, age, behavior). Field notes (September 11 - 12, 1951) document Mill Creek Watershed (Washington) at transect I.P. No 2 on Trail Ridge looking at north facing slopes; Bull Ridge. Abstract:
The journal, field notes, and report documents Helmut Buechner's field work in Washington and California, 1953. Journal entries are dated and are frequently labeled with location. They describe daily work and activities, colleagues with whom worked, meetings attended, observations of flora and fauna (vegetation, mammals, birds), and terrain. Observations vary in content, sometimes as lists of common names. There is a typed document providing details for a field trip to Santa Ynez Valley, California. Locations include Point Conception, California.

Abstract:
The 3 notebooks document Helmut Buechner's field work on Ibex in Switzerland, 1961. The first notebook covers June 18 - August 15, 1961. Entries are dated and describe daily work, colleagues with whom met, research questions, citations for texts, contacts and addresses, wildlife observations (time of day, type, quantity, sex, age, behavior, elevation), birds observed. Some entries include measurements and weight of individual ibex as well as data on anatomy. The second notebook covers August 16 - September 2, 1961 and includes same type of information. The third notebook (September 7 - 8, 1961) includes similar details as well as sketches of ibex locations, equipment, and to-do lists. Locations include Augstmatthorn.

Abstract:
The vegetation observation sheets documenting Helmut Buechner's work during July 30 - September 13, 1951. Sheets list type of environment (e.g. open timber), location, date, exposure, slope, elevation, base line number, transect number, plot number, scats (elk - fresh, old; mule deer - fresh, old), followed by species of plant followed with production (gr.) with green wt. dry wt.; utilization (%) of paired plot; and coverage (t, 1, 2, 3). Species of plants are listed under headings: herbs, forbs, shrubs, and trees. Additionally he lists range of time for observations as well as note on the verso, with narrative description of environment or notes that are possibly counts of plants. Locations include Lewis Peak; Low Ridge Creek; Deduck Springs [Deduct Spring].
